Joe Meaney
Joseph T. Meaney, Jr. began his professional career far from the risk management profession; first as an asset management accountant with a Boston-based investment firm, and then as a production supervisor at fruit drink-maker Welch's, Inc. in Pennsylvania. Seeking a career change and a new challenge, Meaney applied for a risk manager position with Hydra-Co Enterprises, Inc., a private utility company based in Syracuse, New York. Meaney readily admits he knew nothing about the power or insurance industries other than he liked the lights to turn on when he flicked the switch and his car insurance was too expensive. Yet, he flourished.
Meaney served in the role for six years, developing risk management and insurance programs, negotiating insurance claims and implementing safety and ergonomic training programs for employees. From there, he went on to PG&E National Energy Group where he served as managing director of insurance from 1995 to 2004. Meaney honed his risk management skills in this position by designing captive and finite risk solutions, serving as the risk management liaison on merger and acquisitions, and developing a risk management information system.
Meaney currently serves as vice president of global insurance and risk engineering for the AES Corporation, a Fortune 200 electrical power distribution company. At AES, he works with a team of 11 risk professionals and three risk engineers located in seven countries around the world. Meaney and his team are responsible for the development and implementation of insurance strategy for AES Corp. and all subsidiaries, along with management and profit/loss responsibility and accountability for AES's captive insurance company, AES Global Insurance Company (AGIC) and AES's Asset Holding Company (ASEHC).
